DR. HELLEN HIGHLIGHTS MEDIA's CRITICAL ROLE IN ADVANCING ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AHEAD OF UNCCD COP17

 Dodoma, Tanzania

The Chairperson of the Journalists Environmental Association of Tanzania (JET), Dr. Ellen Otaru, has underscored the vital role of journalism and civil society organizations in promoting environmental conservation and supporting Tanzania's participation in the upcoming UNCCD COP17 conference.

Speaking during the UNCCD COP17 National Preparatory Workshop in Dodoma, Dr. Otaru highlighted JET's ongoing efforts to raise public awareness on environmental issues through professional journalism and strategic media engagement. She also outlined the association's role and representation at the forthcoming UNCCD COP17 conference.

Dr. Otaru emphasized that Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) are indispensable partners in addressing environmental challenges. She noted that CSOs contribute significantly by educating communities, supporting environmental protection initiatives, encouraging public participation, and collaborating closely with the government to develop and implement sustainable environmental solutions.

She further stressed that strong partnerships between the media, government institutions, development partners, and civil society are essential for enhancing environmental governance, combating land degradation, and promoting sustainable land management across Tanzania.

The workshop brought together government officials, development partners, civil society organizations, environmental experts, and other key stakeholders to strengthen collaboration and develop Tanzania's national position ahead of the 17th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP17).

The meeting reaffirmed the country's shared commitment to protecting the environment, restoring degraded landscapes, and advancing sustainable land management through inclusive stakeholder engagement and effective communication.
